Driving Innovation Through IoT: A 3-Day Hackathon at Biaka University Institute

From the 20th to the 22nd of march 2025 , we had the privilege of hosting a 3-day Internet of Things (IoT) Hackathon at Biaka University Institute of Buea, bringing together 30 bright engineering and technology students to explore how connected devices can shape the future.

The energy was inspiring from day one as students formed teams, brainstormed ideas, and immediately began tackling real-world problems using IoT. With guidance from mentors, they designed and prototyped solutions that combined hardware, software, and creativity.

What Made This Hackathon Special

Hands-On Learning: Beyond theory, students built tangible prototypes from smart health monitoring tools to energy-efficient systems.

Collaboration: Working in teams fostered problem-solving, critical thinking, and peer-to-peer learning.

Innovation in Action: The solutions reflected both technical skill and a passion for addressing local challenges with global relevance.

Impact on Students

For many participants, this was their first time working intensively on IoT projects. They left with not only stronger technical skills, but also confidence in their ability to innovate. The hackathon also served as a stepping stone for future collaborations, internships, and entrepreneurial projects.

Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning. We believe IoT can transform industries such as health, agriculture, education, and energy in Cameroon. By empowering students with platforms like this, we are building a pipeline of innovators ready to drive change.

We extend our gratitude to Biaka University Institute for hosting us, and to the students whose passion made this hackathon a success. Together, we are proving that the future of technology in Cameroon is bright.
